Tunisia Postcard with Matmata

Tunisie (Tunisia)
The friendship view card

This postcard is postmarked in 2013 with a Tunisia grapes stamp.

There is no writing on the postcard to tell what these places are.  However, I think the bottom center is Matmata.

Matmata is a small town in southern Tunisia. The structures typical for the village are created by digging a large pit in the ground. Around the perimeter of this pit artificial caves are then dug to be used as rooms, with some homes comprising multiple pits, connected by trench-like passageways.

Interesting views of Tunisia, and especially interesting is the description of a typical dwelling in Matmata. I did some googling. They are called "troglodyte" structures. And, an actual troglodyte hotel in Matmata was used as Luke Skywalker's home on the planet Tatooine in the Star Wars movies. Learn something new every day!
