Aplomado Falcon

Aplomado Falcons (Falco femoralis)  were once common in open grasslands and deserts from southern Texas to southern Arizona, the northernmost boundary of their range.  Today they are listed as endangered and vary rare in the U.S. and northern Mexico, but efforts are underway to reintroduce them to Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge.

The Insignia / Emblem for Apollo 11

Apollo 11

The official Apollo 11 Insignia

This postcard is unused.

- - - - - - -

The Apollo 11 mission emblem was designed by Astronaut Michael Collins, who wanted a symbol for "peaceful lunar landing by the United States". At Lovell's suggestion, he chose the bald eagle, the national bird of the United States, as the symbol. Tom Wilson, a simulator instructor, suggested an olive branch in its beak to represent their peaceful mission. Collins added a lunar background with the Earth in the distance.

Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins decided not to put their names on the patch, so it would "be representative of everyone who had worked toward a lunar landing".

Big Orange from Melbourne Florida (International Postcard Week)

Hello!  from the Big Orange!
Eau Gallie / Melbourne, Florida, USA

International Postcard Week
6-12 October 2019

This postcard highlights a tacky eyesore "Big Orange" built in 1966 by Adger Smith, a lifelong resident of Eau Gallie.  It was used as a welcome station by the chamber of commerce to dispense orange juice to tourists.  Big Orange has managed to escape all attempts to demolish the gaudy eyesore.  In fact it is so ugly it has become an icon to the sophisticated Melbourne (formerly the city of Eau Gallie) residents.
