William Penn Adair "Will" Rogers (November 4, 1879 – August 15, 1935) was an American cowboy, vaudeville performer, humorist, social commentator and motion picture actor.

On August 15, 1935 he and aviator Wiley Post left Fairbanks, Alaska for Point Barrow, Alaska. They were a few miles from Point Barrow when they became uncertain of their position in bad weather and landed in a lagoon to ask directions. On takeoff, the engine failed at low altitude, and the aircraft, uncontrollably nose-heavy at low speed, plunged into the lagoon, shearing off the right wing, and ended up inverted in the shallow water of the lagoon. Both men died instantly.

Elvis Presley's Lisa Marie Airplane

Elvis Presley purchased this aircraft a few years back and had extensive interior changes made.  The "TCB" logo on the tail has become known world-wide as well as the aircraft's registration number N880EP.  Elvis named this plane after his daughter, Lisa-Marie and it is now open to the public across from Graceland.

This postcard was printed in 2003 and postmarked in 2015 with two USA stamps.  One of them is an Elvis stamp!

The sender (Postcards and Road Trips) writes:
I've been to visit Graceland but have never toured the jet.  Sadly, the two jets that Elvis owned, "Lisa Marie and "Hound Dog II" were offered up for sealed bid auction.  I hope they stay at Graceland, no matter what!

The Flying Tigers of the 14th Air Force helped drive the enemy from the skies over China and was effective in halting the Japanese ground and naval forces in Japan's attempt to capture China.  The Flying Tigers played a significant role in achieving victory in the pacific theatre in World War II..

My Father, Boyd A. Shumway was 26 years old when he was assigned to the 14th Air Force, 11th bomb squadron, 341st group during WWII.  He flew with the Flying Tigers in the China-Burma-India Theater.  He few 50 Mitchell twin-engine bomber.  He said the roughest missions were night strafing in mountainous areas.  He left China in January 1944, arriving back home in December of that same year.  His oldest child was born while he was in China and he saw him for the first time when Bob was 9 months old.

Icelandair is the main airline of Iceland, headquartered at Reykjavík Airport.  It is part of the Icelandair Group and currently operates scheduled services to 35 cities in 16 countries on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.  

In 2012, Icelandair transported 2,021,000 passengers, an increase of 16% compared to 2011.

The Fokker M.5 was an unarmed single-seat monoplane aircraft designed and built by Anthony Fokker in 1913. It served as a light reconnaissance aircraft with the German army at the outbreak of World War I and was the basis for the first successful fighter aircraft in German service, the Fokker E.I.

Several C-47 variations were used in the Vietnam War by the United States Air Force, including three advanced electronic warfare variations which were sometimes called "Electric Gooneys".  There was also a gunship variation, designated AC-47 "Spooky" often nicknamed "Puff the Magic Dragon".

One of the still flyable veterans of the Ju52 family is D-AQUI, which is today operated out of Germany by DEUTSCHE LUFTHANSA AG (Largest airline in Europe). The aircraft was original delivered to Lufthansa in 1936.

Since 1986 the aircraft, now named Tempelhof, is used for sightseeing flights.

On a chilly windswept beach at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Wilbur and Orville Wright inaugurated the aerial age with their historical flight on December 17th, 1903. The Wright Flyer was the world's first heavier-than-air, powered craft to make a sustained controlled flight with a pilot aboard. With Orville at the controls and Wilbur observing, the first flight covered the distance of 120 feet and lasted 12 seconds. A total of four flights were made with the Flyer, the best traveling 852 feet in 59 seconds with Wilbur as the pilot.

The SR-71 was the world's fastest and highest-flying operational manned aircraft throughout its career. On 28 July 1976, an SR-71 broke the world record for its class: an absolute speed record of 1,905.81 knots (2,193.17 mph; 3,529.56 km/h), and an "absolute altitude record" of 85,069 feet (25,929 m). Several aircraft exceeded this altitude in zoom climbs but not in sustained flight.

When the SR-71 was retired in 1990, one example was flown from its birthplace at United States Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, California, to go on exhibit at what is now the Smithsonian Institution's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center (an annex of the National Air & Space Museum) in Chantilly, Virginia. On 6 March 1990, Lt. Col. Ed Yielding and Lt. Col. J. T. Vida piloted the Blackbird, setting a coast-to-coast aircraft speed record: 67 minutes 54 seconds, at an average speed 2,125 miles per hour (3,420 km/h). Three additional records were set within segments of the flight, including an average speed of 2,190 miles per hour (3,520 km/h) measured between the radar gates set up in St. Louis and Cincinnati. These four speed records were accepted by the National Aeronautic Association (NAA), the recognized body for aviation records in the United States.
