I took this photo September 2016 at the Cleveland (Ohio) Public Library during the art installation "Flock," by CrackingArt, a group from Milan Italy.  There were over 300 recyclable plastic animal figures all over downtown.  I loved the snails!

Neil Armstrong Home Coming Day at Wapakoneta, Ohio.  September 6, 1969, traversing the parade route in his home town, and greeting his fellow townsmen, is Astronaut Neil Armstrong, first man to set foot on the moon.

The Recipe for Ohio Buckeye Candy

Ohio Buckeye Candy

1 stick soft butter
1 box powdered sugar
1 1/2 cups peanut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 package (12 ounces) chocolate chips

Mix first four ingredients.  Form into small balls and refrigerate overnight.  Melt chocolate chips.  Using a toothpick, pick up a peanut butter ball and partially dip into chocolate.  Refrigerate or freeze until ready to serve.  Makes about 4 dozen delicious Buckeye Candies.

Buckeye Candy is named after the shiny, dark nuts of the Buckeye Tree, the official state tree of Ohio.

Interurbans on Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio in 1909.  Interurbans serving Norwalk at this time were the Lake Shore Electric Railway, the Cleveland Southwestern and Columbus Railway and the Sandusky, Norwalk and Mansfield Electric Railway.

Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad fueling facilities in Norwalk, Ohio in the 1880's.  Steam locomotives were still using wood for fuel when this early photograph was made.

Great American Crossroad

Construction of the Bucyrus Court House began in 1850 and went through various modifications over the years to reach its present day splendor.  It is depicted here in a detail from the 34' X 130' mural entitled: Bucyrus: Great American Crossroad by artist Eric Grohe.

This is postmarked in 2009 with a 27 cent Guava stamp and a 1 cent Tiffany lamp stamp.

Cutting Ice Blocks for Fish in Sandusky, Ohio

Firelands Postcard Club

Every winter, ice and commercial fishing companies cut ice on Sandusky bay and stored the blocks in ice houses.  Horse-drawn cutters and large hand saws were used to cut blocks, which were poled along cut channels to the ice houses.  Blocks were packed in saw dust and used throughout the year - selling ice blocks and packing fish.

Longaberger Company, Large Basket Building in Ohio

The seven-story, 180,000 square foot Home Office of the Longaberger Company is a one-of-a-kind basket-shaped architectural marvel and is modeled after the Company's Medium Market Basket.  The building, which serves as an icon for The Longaberger Company, is located at One Market Square, 1500 East Main Street, Newark, Ohio  43055.

We do not live too far from here.  There are other large basket buildings in the town as well, but this is by far the biggest.  It is massive!

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation was created April 20, 1983. However, it had no home. The search committee considered several cities, including Memphis (home of Sun Studios and Stax Records), Cincinnati (home of King Records), New York City, and Cleveland. Cleveland lobbied hard to be chosen, citing that Cleveland disc jockey Alan Freed is widely credited with promoting the new genre (and the term) of "rock and roll", and that Cleveland was the location of the first rock and roll concert. Civic leaders in Cleveland pledged $65 million in public money to fund the construction. A petition drive was signed by 600,000 fans favoring Cleveland over Memphis, and a USA Today poll which Cleveland won by 100,000 votes. The hall of fame board voted to build the 150,000 square foot museum in Cleveland.

First Rock 'N Roll Concert - Cleveland, Ohio

Rock 'N Roll and Cleveland

Officially coined over the radio airwaves of the city by Cleveland's DJ Alan Freed, Rock 'N Roll is intertwined with the city. Cleveland was the site of the first Rock concert and is the hometown of many famous Rock 'N Roll musicians.

The First Rock Concert:

The Moondog Coronation Ball was a concert held at the Cleveland Arena in Cleveland, Ohio on March 21, 1952. It is generally accepted as the first major rock and roll concert.

The concert was organized by Alan Freed (a disc jockey considered to have coined the term "Rock and Roll" at WJW-Radio), along with Lew Platt, a local concert promoter, and Freed's sponsors, including Leo Mintz, owner of the Record Rendezvous store. More tickets were printed than the arena's actual capacity, in part due to counterfeiting. With an estimated 20,000 individuals trying to crowd into an arena that held slightly more than half that - and worries that a riot might break out as people tried to crowd in - the fire authorities shut down the concert after the first song by opening act Paul "Hucklebuck" Williams ended.

Moondog today:

Today, the Moondog is a more controlled concert, but still evokes the spirit of the 1950s. Half a dozen vintage rock and roll performers entertain concert-goers and many of the attendees dress in classic 1950s-style. WMJI radio has sponsored the event in mid-March at the Quicken Loans Arena for several years.

Soap Box Derby, Akron, Ohio

Greetings form Derby Downs and the Annual Soap Box Derby. Entries from all over the world gather in Akron each year for this, the greatest amateur racing event in the world.

Derby Downs, in Akron, Ohio, has been the home track of the All American Soap Box Derby since it was built as a Works Progress Administration project in the late 1930s. The three-lane asphalt track starts near the top of George Washington Boulevard and drops in a straight line down the wooded hill in the shadow of the Rubber Bowl, ending under final approach for runway 25 of Akron Fulton International Airport. Many people every year come to the "Downs".

There are three car categories (divisions) each having a different type of car: Stock, Super Stock, and Masters. They only race in their own categories. Each time a competitor has to race down the hill they race twice. Each time they go down it is called a Phase, and two Phases are called a Heat. When going down the track just nudging the steering wheel may cost you the heat. A win is determined by a fraction of a second. Rarely do they ever get a tie or a "Dead heat" especially during the All American Soap Box Derby.
