Philadelphia Zoological Gardens, 1948

The Zoological Garden is located in Fairmount Park on the west side of the Schuylkill River, stretching over 33 acres. It contains a large collection of wild animals, birds and reptiles from all over the world.

This is postmarked in 1948.

The Philadelphia Zoo is now 42-acres with victorian gardens and is home to more than 1300 animals, many of them rare and endangered.

The Queen's Guard and Queen's Life Guard are the names given to contingents of infantry and cavalry soldiers charged with guarding the official royal residences in London.

The Queen's Life Guard is the mounted guard at the entrance to Horse Guards. Horse Guards is the official main entrance to both St James's Palace and Buckingham Palace. The guard is on horseback from 10am until 4pm, with the two sentries changing every hour. From 4pm until 8pm a pair of dismounted sentries remain. At 8pm, the gates of Horse Guards are locked, and a single sentry remains until 7am.

Beefeater is the colloquial name of the Yeomen of the Guard.

The Queen's Body Guard of the Yeomen of the Guard are a bodyguard of the British Monarch. The oldest British military corps still in existence, it was created by Henry VII in 1485 at the Battle of Bosworth Field. The Yeomen still wear red and gold uniforms of Tudor style. There are 60 Yeomen of the Guard (plus 6 Officers), drawn from retired members of the British Army, Royal Marines and Royal Air Force, but not the Royal Navy, because while members of the other services take oaths to the Crown, members of the Navy take an oath to the Admiralty.

History of Sunglasses

Before there were sunglasses:
It is said that the Roman emperor Nero liked to watch gladiator fights with emeralds. These, however, appear to have worked rather like mirrors. Flat panes of smoky quartz which offered no corrective powers but did protect the eyes from glare were used in China in the 12th century or possibly earlier. Contemporary documents describe the use of such crystals by judges in Chinese courts to conceal their facial expressions while questioning witnesses.
James Ayscough began experimenting with tinted lenses in spectacles in the mid-18th century, around 1752. These were not "sunglasses" as such; Ayscough believed blue- or green-tinted glass could correct for specific vision impairments. Protection from the sun's rays was not a concern for him.

Modern developments:
In the early 1900s, the use of sunglasses started to become more widespread, especially among the pioneering stars of silent movies. It is commonly believed that this was to avoid recognition by fans, but the real reason was they often had perennially red eyes from the powerful arc lamps that were needed due to the extremely slow speed film stocks used. The stereotype persisted long after improvements in film quality and the introduction of ultraviolet filters had eliminated this problem.

Inexpensive mass-produced sunglasses were introduced to America by Sam Foster in 1929. Foster found a ready market on the beaches of Atlantic City, New Jersey, where he began selling sunglasses under the name Foster Grant from a Woolworth on the Boardwalk.
Polarized sunglasses first became available in 1936, when Edwin H. Land began experimenting with making lenses with his patented Polaroid filter.

Cathedral Caverns State Park is located within Woodville, Alabama city limits. The cave was first developed as an attraction by Jay Gurley in the late 1950s. It was declared a National Natural Landmark in June 1972.

Mr. Gurley maintained the cave as a tourist attraction from 1959 to 1974. The cave was sold in 1975 at an auction. The State of Alabama bought the cave in 1987 with the intent to reopen the site as a state park. After funding delays, restoration work actually began in 1995. In May 2000, the Cavern re-opened to the public.

In 1995, Cathedral Caverns provided the cave settings for the Disney Studios film Tom and Huck especially where the vicious Injun Joe (Eric Schweig) falls into an enormous chasm.

Cathedral Caverns holds six world records:

(1) Cathedral Caverns has the widest entrance of any commercial cave in the world. It is 25 feet tall and 128 feet wide.

(2) Cathedral Caverns is home to "Goliath"--the largest stalagmite in the world. It measures 45 feet tall and 243 feet in circumstance.

(3) Cathedral Caverns has the largest flow stone wall, which is 32 feet tall and 135 feet long.

(4) Cathedral Caverns is known for the largest "frozen" waterfall.

(5) Cathedral Caverns has the largest stalagmite forest of any cave in the world.

(6) Cathedral Caverns has the most improbably formation in the world which is a stalagmite that is 35 feet tall and 3 inches wide!

With a head shaped like a tiny prancing horse, in rigid bony plates and thorny spikes and a tail that curls like a snake, there is little about the sea horse to suggest that he really is a fish. It swims upright with the aid of a single back fin. With its tail curled around sea weed to keep from being swept away, it looks like a small dragon from some fairy tale.

One of the most curious agreements known to marine biologists is that between male and female. The female puts her eggs into the male's front vest pocket, which resembles a kangaroo's pouch, so that the father instead of the mother carries the eggs about until they are hatched.

They eat only live sea life such as plankton and the eggs of other sea creatures, smaller than themselves. They are found in large numbers along Florida's seacoast.

After the earthquake, this almost 100 year old building is gone - only the lower walls are left.

On the Brijuni there are several archaeological and cultural sites.

At four sites on Veli Brijun island over 200 dinosaur footprints have been discovered, which can be traced to the Cretaceous Period from where Brijuni Cretaceous Park gets its name.

There are also several archeological sites worth seeing. There is the 13th century AD St. Mary's Church which was built by the Knights Templar. There are also two ancient Roman villa remains, from the 2nd Century BC. The last remain is Hill-fort which indicates a Bronze Age settlement on the island dating back to 14th century BC.

There are also several exhibitions including natural history and art exhibitions, and archaeological collections.

Lord of the Rings

This was a WONDERFUL surprise postcard for me! The sender is from New Zealand and her dad was an extra in the Return of the King, from the trilogy The Lord of the Rings. (My favorite movies :) This is him dressed for the Mount Doom battle scene.

The sender writes:
As soon as I found out you love Lord of the Rings, I thought I would make this for you. (The picture is glued to a light cardboard, then sent as a handmade postcard!!!) This is my father in full costume! Apparently it was quite secretive around the set. Dad auditioned because they wanted tall people and dad is tall.
