The Kallawaya are an itinerant group of traditional healers living in the Andes of Bolivia. According to the UNESCO Safeguarding Project, the Kallawaya can be traced to the pre-Inca period. The Kallawaya performed brain surgery as early as 700 CE and knew how to effectively prevent and treat malaria with quinine before the Europeans.

Kallawaya doctors (médicos Kallawaya), are known as the naturopathic healers of Inca kings, and as keepers of science knowledge, principally the pharmaceutical properties of vegetables, animals and minerals. Most Kallawaya healers understand how to use 300 herbs, while specialists are familiar with 600 herbs. Kallawaya women are often midwives, treat gynecological disorders, and pediatric patients.

Demonstration of the Planetarium instrument.  It projects into the dome a miniature universe.  So perfectly is this portrayed that one has the feeling of looking into the true heaven.  Here one can see the celestial host in its daily journey across the sky, can see the Sun, Moon and planets threading their ways among the stars, and can see the changing aspect of the sky due to change of position on the Earth or due to precessional motion.  The day, the year, and the precessional cycle can be shortened into minutes or even seconds.

The Adler Planetarium opened to the public on May 12, 1930. It is America's first planetarium and part of Chicago's Museum Campus, which includes the John G. Shedd Aquarium and The Field Museum.

Oshkosh is known for OshKosh B'Gosh, a manufacturer of overalls and children's clothing founded in Oshkosh in 1895. Originally a small-town manufacturer of adult work clothing, it became best known for its children's lines.

Despite the name, OshKosh B'Gosh overalls are no longer made in Oshkosh, though the company maintains corporate offices there.

Letterpress started to become largely out-of-date in the 1980s because of the rise of computers and new self-publishing print and publish methods.

Contemporary letterpress is considered a craft as it involves using a skill and is made by hand.

Today, some small letterpress shops survive by printing fine editions of books or by printing upscale invitations and stationery. These methods often use presses that require the press operator to feed paper one sheet at a time by hand.

Rosie the Riveter - We Can Do It!

This is a reproduction postcard of the 'Rosie the Riveter' poster.

It is postmarked in 2014 from Germany.

Rosie the Riveter is a cultural icon of the United States, representing the American women who worked in factories during World War II, many of whom produced ammunitions and war supplies while the men were serving as soldiers in the war.

In 1942, Pittsburgh artist J. Howard Miller was hired by the Westinghouse Company's War Production Coordinating Committee to create a series of posters for the war effort. One of these posters became the famous "We Can Do It!" image that you see above.

Winchester, Virginia, established in 1752, is also known as the Apple Capital, where the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival is celebrated the first weekend of May each year.

Several attempts to manufacture cars in Saginaw took place in the era moving from lumber to the automobile age; The Valley Boat and Engine Co., being one of them.
In 1914, the only year of production, 35 of the two-seat Saginaw Cyclecar were built.  It was of wood frame with carbide lights and it promised 50 MPG from it's one gallon fuel tank, and sold for $395.00.
This beauty presently resides in The Saginaw Castle Museum. (In Michigan)

Astronaut Alan B. Shepard and the Mercury Spacecraft Freedom 7

U.S. Astronaut Alan B. Shepard, Jr.
U.S. Navy Commander Alan B. Shepard, Jr. was born November 18, 1923 in East Derry, New Hampshire

On May 5, 1961, Shepard piloted the Mercury-Redstone 3 "Freedom 7" spacecraft on the first manned space flight of the United Sates.  Mr-3 was a suborbital flight following a ballistic trajectory.  The flight attained an altitude of approximately 116 statue miles and the space-craft traveled about 254 statue miles down the Atlantic Missile Range.

Original Mercury Spacecraft Freedom 7, in which Alan B. Shepard, Jr., made the first United States manned-flight into space, May 5, 1961.  This sub-orbital flight blazed the trail for the earth-orbiting flights which were to follow.

This is a picture taken at SunFest and turned into a postcard.  Of course any decent Florida postcard would have a large pink flamingo on it!  It is postmarked on May 4th, 2015 with a 'From Me to You' USPS stamp.

SunFest is a music and art festival held annually in the first week of May in West Palm Beach, Florida. It is the state's largest waterfront music and art festival and attracts more than 275,000 visitors.

A Recipe for Cucumber Water - National Postcard Week

Celebrate National Postcard Week
May 3-9, 2015
With a cool refreshing drink of
Cucumber Water

Ingredients:
1 cucumber,  peeled cut in pieces
1 cucumber, peeled and sliced thinly
1 gallon of water
3 mint springs
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup lime juice
Ice cubes

In a blender, mix 2 cups of water, cucumber, mint, sugar and lime juice.  Refrigerate one day for best flavor.  Strain through fine sieve.  Add remaining water.  Serve in a glass with ice cube and 3 to 5 thinly sliced cucumbers.

Thank you for all you do!

Demaris Swint has been a huge influence on NPCW.  She inherited boxes of cards from every year since the beginning.  She gathers the list of participants every year to help keep NPCW alive.  She built a website just for the hobby, where there are cards from this year and back to day one.  And now she publishes the annual directory.  That's just a small part of all that she does for us.  I thought she deserved a little recognition.

This postcard is from Jane Hepner and is a limited edition # 94 of 100.

The little 'made with love' attachment is made of metal.
