James Byron Dean (February 8, 1931 – September 30, 1955) was an American film actor.  He is a cultural icon, best embodied in the title of his most celebrated film, Rebel Without a Cause (1955), in which he starred as troubled Los Angeles teenager Jim Stark. The other two roles that defined his stardom were as loner Cal Trask in East of Eden (1955), and as the surly farmer, Jett Rink, in Giant (1956). Dean's enduring fame and popularity rests on his performances in only these three films, all leading roles. His premature death in a car crash cemented his legendary status.

In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Dean the 18th best male movie star on their AFI's 100 Years...100 Stars list.

Simeiz (Simeis) in the Ukraine

 Simeis

Postmarked in 2011 with a Ukraine 6.00, 15 pokiB stamp

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Simeiz or Simeïs is a resort town in Crimea, Ukraine. It is located by the southern slopes of the main range of Crimean Mountains at the base of Mount Koshka.

There are prehistoric dolmens and fortifications nearby; in the Middle Ages the area was under the control of the Byzantine Empire, which built a fortified monastery in the vicinity (and may have given the town its name). As the Byzantine power weakened, the area fell under the control of Genoa, which in its turn gave way to the Ottoman Empire; under the Ottomans the village was ruled from Mangup. By 1778, with the departure of the Christian population, the village was depopulated.

In 1828 Simeiz came into the ownership of Ivan Akimovich Maltsov, who planted grapevines and fruit orchards; at the start of the 20th century his descendants created a resort, Novy Simoiz, which quickly became one of the most prestigious resorts in the Crimea. This period saw the construction of a park and a number of villas which remain to this day. In 1912 Nicholas II visited with his family. After the October Revolution, Simeiz was nationalized and public sanatoriums were created, mainly specializing in tuberculosis.

Tombstone, Arizona

Tombstone, Arizona
"The Town Too Tough to Die"
The former Cochise County Court House, completed in 1882, was in the early days the most imposing structure in Southern Arizona.  Its large courtroom was the scene of many dramatic trials - the jail led from the courtroom to the basement, and the courtyard to the northwest was the location of several hangings.

The Famous Crystal Palace
The oldest continuously operated bar in Arizona.  Operated 24 hours a day from 1881 until prohibition in 1914.  in the 80's and early 90's, it ran as a bar and gambling house with booths in the rear for ladies.  Through its doors have passed all the famous characters of the southwest.  Operated by Walter Lombardi who was born and raised in Tombstone, it still retains the hospitality and friendliness of the old west.

Welcome to Tombstone and Boothill Graveyard
Approaching from the west the visitor is greeted by this sign.  It names several of the early west's bad men who "died with their boots on," and are buried in Boothill along with other good law abiding citizens.  Boothill Graveyard is visited by thousands of tourists at all seasons of the year.

Tom McLaury, Frank McLaury, and Billy Clanton, killed in the O.K. Corral shootout, are buried in the town's Boot Hill cemetery. "Boot Hill" refers to the number of men who died with their boots on. Among a number of pioneer Boot Hill cemeteries in the Old West, Boot Hill in Tombstone is among the most well-known. Marshal Fred White, killed by Curly Bill Brocius, is also among the approximately 300 people buried there.

Among the most well-known markers belongs to Lester Moore. He was a Wells, Fargo & Co. station agent in the Mexican border town of Naco, Arizona Territory. One afternoon Hank Dunstan appeared to claim a package due him. When he got it, he found it thoroughly mangled. The two men argued, and then both Moore and Dunstan drew their weapons. Dunstan got off four shots, hitting Moore in the chest with his .44 caliber revolver. Dunstan was mortally wounded with a hole through his ribs by the single shot Moore had squeezed off. Les Moore was buried in Boot Hill, and his famous tombstone epitaph remains an attraction in the cemetery:

HERE LIES LESTER MOORE, FOUR SLUGS FROM A 44, NO LES NO MORE
The cemetery is one of the city's most popular tourist attractions.

How Rice University Started - Houston Texas

Lovett Hall or Administration Building, Rice Institute, Houston, Texas

Houston has in Rice Institute one of the largest privately endowed colleges in the country.  The original endowment of nine million dollars by the late Wm. Marsh Rice, has grown to 14,500.000.
unused
- - - - - - - -

Long a big name in America's colleges, Rice is one of Houston's landmarks. Thousands of young men and women are graduated annually from its schools. In athletics and scholastics its ranking is generally among the top educational institutions. Rice Institute is another reason why Houston is "America's fastest growing metropolitan city."

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The history of Rice University began with the untimely demise of Massachusetts businessman William Marsh Rice. Rice made his fortune in real estate, railroad development, and cotton trading in the state of Texas. In 1891, Rice decided to charter a free-tuition educational institute in Houston, bearing his name, to be created upon his death, earmarking most of his estate towards funding the project. On the morning of September 23, 1900, Rice was found dead by his valet, and presumed to have died in his sleep. Shortly thereafter, a suspiciously large check made out to Rice's New York City lawyer, signed by the late Rice, was noticed by a bank teller due to a misspelling in the recipient's name. The lawyer, Albert T. Patrick, then announced that Rice had changed his will to leave the bulk of his fortune to Patrick, rather than to the creation of Rice's educational institute. A subsequent investigation led by the District Attorney of New York resulted in the arrests of Patrick and of Rice's butler and valet Charles F. Jones, who had been persuaded to administer chloroform to Rice while he slept. Rice's friend and personal lawyer in Houston, James A. Baker, Sr., aided in the discovery of what turned out to be a fake will with a forged signature. It took nearly ten years for Jones and Patrick to be found guilty of conspiring to steal Rice's fortune. Patrick was convicted of murder in 1901. Baker helped Rice's estate direct the fortune, worth $4.6 million in 1904 ($111 million today), towards the founding of what was to be called the Rice Institute.

Greece - Making Bread in an Outdoor Oven

 Outdoor Wood Burning Oven

This lady looks amazing!  I wonder how many loaves she has made in her lifetime.

Postmarked in 2011 with two Greece (Hellas) stamps featuring a blue set of stairs with a red circle

Here is a recipe I found for a classic Greek bread (It says that it is a bit more dense than regular bread) :

Prep Time: 3 hours, 20 minutes

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Total Time: 3 hours, 50 minutes

Ingredients:

1 ounce of fresh yeast or 2 tablespoons of dry yeast
1/2 cup (4 fl.oz) of lukewarm water
1/2 cup (62g) of flour (whatever type used for bread)
2 1/5 pounds (1 kilo / 8 cups) of bread flour (whole wheat, barley, white, corn, or other)
1 tablespoon of salt
2 1/2 cups (20 fl.oz) of lukewarm water
2 tablespoons of milk
2 tablespoons of olive oil
2 tablespoons of honey
Preparation:

In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in lukewarm water. Slowly add the 1/2 cup of flour and mix until all lumps of flour have dissolved, to form a thick liquid. Allow to rise about 15-20 minutes.

For a thicker crust, score the tops of the loaves in 3 or 4 places (like you see on the postcard). Otherwise, bake as is on the rack just below the middle of the oven for 30-35 minutes until browned. When tapped on the bottom, bread will sound hollow.

When the loaves are done, remove from oven and cool on racks.

The splendid toadfish, also known as the coral toadfish, is a species of toadfish only found in the waters by Cozumel, Mexico. Commonly found under coral outcroppings and are very difficult to coax out in the open.

Unlike any other member of the toadfish family, the splendid toadfish is distinctive for its vibrant colors. It has bright yellow fins which also contain distinctive patterning, while its head contains dark and white stripes.

Like most species that dwell close to the sand, the splendid toadfish has eyes located on the top of its head which look directly upwards as there is mostly no need for a horizontal vision. Small and sharp teeth also fill wide jaws.

Hundertwasserhaus (Apartments)

- - - - - - -
The name Darmstadt first appears towards the end of the 11th century, then Darmundestat; Literally translated, the current German name Darmstadt means "Intestine City". This is just a coincidence however, and the origins of the name are unknown. 'Dar-mund' in Middle Low German is translated as "Boggy Headlands", but it could be a misspelling in local dialect of another name. Even locals often believe, incorrectly, that the name derives from the 'Darmbach' (a small stream formerly running through the city). In fact the stream received its current name much later, after the city, not vice versa.

Precolonial Ruins of El Tazumal, El Salvador, Central America

postmarked in 1967 with two El Salvador stamp

Tazumal is a Pre-Columbian Maya archeological site in Chalchuapa, El Salvador. Tazumal means, "the place where the victims were burned," in K'iche'.

The site is located in the heart of Chalchuapa in the department of Santa Ana, some 60 kilometers from the capital, San Salvador. It includes a series of Maya ruins, including ceremonial architecture, that date to about AD 100-1200. The site includes an intricate water drainage system, a few tombs, adjacent minor pyramids, palaces and excavated ritual objects.

The ruins of Tazumal are considered the most important and best preserved in El Salvador. The artifacts found at Tazumal provide evidence of ancient and active trade between Tazumal and places as far away as Panama and Mexico. The excavated ruins are part of an area covering 10 km² (4 sq mi), much of it buried under the surrounding town. Archaeologists estimate that the first settlements in the area of Chalchuapa date to around 1200 BC.

Porto, Portugal, 1736 to Today and Porto Wine

This is a Postcrossing meet-up postcard sent to me in 2011 with the signatures of 3 people from Portugal. It has a Rock Album Cover stamp on the back.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Porto, also known as Oporto in English, is the second largest city in Portugal.

Located along the Douro river estuary in northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centres, and registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. Its settlement dates back many centuries, when it was an outpost of the Roman Empire. Its Latin name, Portus Cale, has been referred to as the origin for the name "Portugal," based on transliteration from Latin.

One of Portugal's internationally famous exports, port wine, is named for Porto, since the metropolitan area, and in particular the adegas of Vila Nova de Gaia, were responsible for the production and export of the fortified wine. (See Postcard Below)
