Welcome to Belarus

The stone-built circus in Minsk was the first stationary winter circus in the Soviet Union.

Construction started in 1954 and was completed in 1958. It was the largest circus that could host any kind of performance – from water shows to aerial acrobatics shows.

The opening night took place on 11 February 1959, which is now marked as the official birthday of the contemporary Belarusian circus.

Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin (9 March 1934 – 27 March 1968) was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut. He was the first human to journey into outer space, when his Vostok spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on 12 April 1961.
Gagarin became an international celebrity, and was awarded many medals and titles, including Hero of the Soviet Union, the nation's highest honour.

Gagarin died in 1968 when the MiG 15 training jet he was piloting crashed.

thanks Louise - I like to get a little history or some fun facts about my postcards. If possible, I post them on the date that is significant to the card. :D
