A Few Postcards of Christ the Redeemer in Brazil

Rio De Janeiro - Brasil
Cristo Redentor

The sender writes:

Here we are in Rio - Seems a long way from home.  Rosa Page Welch is singing her way into the hearts of the people.  We san together on the plane yesterday, something to pass the hours away.  We were on the plane all night.  We visited this statue of Christ the Redeemer on a mountain yesterday.  It is very hot here.  Wish you were along.

This is a real photo postcard is is postmarked in 1956 from Brazil.

Christ the Redeemer is a statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and is considered the largest Art Deco statue in the world. It is 30 metres (98 ft) tall, not including its 8 metres (26 ft) pedestal, and the arms stretch 28 metres (92 ft) wide. It is located at the peak of the 700-metre (2,300 ft) Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city. The statue is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone, and was constructed between 1922 and 1931.

Beautiful statue, of course. I like how you started with a close-up, then each successive card got progressively further away.

I am amazed at how it was even built up on that mountain top. And that road, that's one heck of a road!

And also amazed at how it looks to be in excellent condition after almost 100 years.

I wonder if it ever gets struck by lightning. I must google!

I think I have seen pictures of it on-line getting hit by lightning, but I always wonder how many of those are real and how many are photo-shop.
