Wedding of Lady Diana and Prince Charles

Down the aisle!
On July 29, 1981, the fairy tale romance of the century culminated in the marriage of Charles Philip, Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Frances Spencer.  It was solemnized at St. Paul's Cathedral by the Archbishop of Canterbury.  The 2,500 fortunate guests were enchanted during 70 minutes of music by massed choristers, trumpet fanfares and by the recitation of vows by the two young people everyone loves.  July 29, 1981

Market Place and Brabo

This postcard is postmarked in 2014 from Belgium.

- - - - - -

Silvius Brabo is a mythical Roman soldier who is said to have killed a giant, and by this would have created the name Brabant.

This story was used to explain the name Antwerp (meaning hand throwing). Brabo once killed a giant, called Druon Antigoon, who asked money from people who wanted to pass the bridge over the river Scheldt. When they didn't want to or couldn't pay, he cut off their hand and threw it in the river. Because of this Brabo also removed the hand of the giant, and threw it into the river.

As seen in this postcard, the legend is shown on the statue in front of the Antwerp City Hall.

Classic Piña colada
4 ounces cream of coconut
4 ounces pineapple juice
2 cups ice
2 slices pineapple and maraschino cherries for garnish

1 Put the cream of coconut, ice, and pineapple juice in a blender. This drink comes together quickly when you add all the ingredients at once. Reserve the pineapple slices and cherries, though - those are for the garnish.
2 Blend until the ice is crushed. It might take several pulses to get the creamy texture of a classic piña colada.
3 Pour into a glass and Garnish with a pineapple slice and a maraschino cherry. Float the pineapple rings on top of the drinks and put the cherries in the middle of the rings.

Petit Jean State Park in Arkansas

Located in Petit Jean State Park near Morrilton, Arkansas, this unusual rock formation forms a natural bridge along Seven hollows Trail.

This is postmarked with a 24 cent Common Buckeye stamp in 2007.

How the park got its name:

According to legend Petit Jean was actually a young 18th century French woman. When she discovered that her fiance planned to explore the Louisiana Territory, she cut her hair, disguised herself as a boy and managed to find a position as a cabin boy. She survived the voyage and the expedition began their exploration. Once they had reached the area of the mountain, the young woman became ill, on her deathbed she revealed herself to her fiance, and was buried on the mountain, not under her own name, but under the name she had been known by on the ship "Little John".

During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia declaring the United States independent from Great Britain. After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the wording of the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4.

A day earlier, John Adams had written to his wife Abigail:
The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.

Adams's prediction was off by two days. From the outset, Americans celebrated independence on July 4, the date shown on the much-publicized Declaration of Independence, rather than on July 2.
