Coast Highway at Sunset in California

Along the Shore of the Pacific at Sunset

Coast Highway
In the founding of the Missions of California, Santa Barbara being the tenth, the Franciscan Padres established them a day's journey on foot apart.  The path from Mission to Mission was called "El Camino real" (the King's Highway).  It is so known today, but generally referred to as the Coast Highway, and is the main artery of travel between northern and southern California.

I love that the jelly bean on the tractor is harvesting other jelly beans on the farm!  Would that be like a person growing and harvesting other people??  lol

The Jelly Belly Candy Company, or simply Jelly Belly, is a maker of jelly beans and other candy, formerly known as The Herman Goelitz Candy Company. The company is based in Fairfield, California and produces more than 34 million pounds (15,000 tonnes) of candy annually.

Belly Flops
In the process of making Jelly Belly beans some of the beans stick together, are too large or too small, making them not meet the standards of quality. These imperfect beans, rather than being scrapped, are repackaged as Belly Flops. Belly Flops are sold in five ounce, one pound, or two pound packages at the Jelly Belly factory, other select stores.

Mariazell is a small city in Austria well known for winter sports. It is picturesquely situated in the valley of the Salza, amid the north Styrian Alps.

There are three basic legends about the founding of Mariazell and its development.

The legend of the towns founding says that in 1157, the St. Lambrecht Monk Magnus was sent to the area of the current town as a minister. When his way was blocked by a rock, he set down the Marian figurine he had brought with him, whereby the rock broke apart and left Magnus' way clear. On a nearby bank, he settled down, placed the figurine on a tree trunk, and built a cell out of wood, which served as both his chapel and his living quarters.

The second legend relates how Henry Margrave of Moravia and his wife, having been healed of severe gout through the help of Our Lady of Mariazell made a pilgrimage to that place around 1200. There they built the first stone church on the site of the wooden chapel.

The third legend recounts a victorious battle of the Hungarian King Ludwig I over a numerically superior Turkish army. Out of thanks he built the gothic church and endowed it with the "Schatzkammerbild" ("treasury image") that he saw laid upon his chest in a dream.

Man o' War, (March 29, 1917  – November 1, 1947) is considered one of the greatest Thoroughbred racehorses of all time. During his career just after World War I, he won 20 of 21 races and $249,465 in purses.

Man o' War was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1957. Soon after, the Man o' War Stakes was made in his honor. In the Blood-Horse magazine ranking of the top 100 U.S. Thoroughbred champions of the 20th Century, Man o' War was ranked No. 1.

He died in 1 November 1947 at age 30 of an apparent heart attack only a very short time after his longtime groom, Will Harbut, died. He was originally placed in his grave at Faraway Farm, but, in the early 1970s, his remains were moved to a new burial site at the Kentucky Horse Park, where his grave is marked with a statue by American sculptor, Herbert Haseltine.

Happy Halloween Poem

Happy Hallowe'en

Guess Halloween is not so bad
Cause most folks seem mighty glad
And all fix up in this or that,
WIth funny face and funny hat.

Some look like ghosts, some like dogs
Some like witches, some like frogs,
And Mickey Mouse is on the scene
Or Snow White and the lovely Queen,

Then Ferdinand will prance about
While every one will dance and shout.
Pop-eye the sailor will be on hand
With Olive Oyle at his command,

All  year long we wouldn't dare,
To make our neighbors stop and stare.
But this one night is a night of fun
And the only night it can be done.

So get your face and funny hat
And some of this and some of that,
And be a clown just for tonite,
For after all it is quite right
To have your fun and have it clean
For this is Happy Halloween.

The Haunted Hotel Del Coronado in California

Hotel Del Coronado, California

unused, from 2011

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Hotel del Coronado is a beachfront luxury hotel in the city of Coronado, just across the San Diego Bay from San Diego, California. It is one of the oldest and largest all-wooden buildings in California and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977.

When it opened in 1888, it was the largest resort hotel in the world and the first to use electrical lighting. It has hosted presidents, royalty, and celebrities throughout the years. The hotel has been featured in numerous movies and books.

The hotel received the Four Diamond rating from the American Automobile Association, and was listed by USA Today as one of the "Top 10 Resorts In The World".

One famous resident of the hotel is the purported ghost of Kate Morgan. On November 24, 1892, she checked into room 304 (then 3318, now 3327), to meet with her husband who was a doctor and he was going to give her medicine for her stomach cancer, but he never arrived. She was found dead on the steps leading to the beach three days later. The case was declared a suicide. She had shot herself. Ever since then, some guests that have checked into room 3327 have reported flickering lights and floating objects.

Personally, I think you have to be a bit on the crazy side to scuba dive in a shark tank!  (For the record, I'd do it!)

Sand sharks grow up to 10 feet in adult length and can reach up to 200-350 pounds.  They are the only shark known to surface for gulps of air. They store the air in their stomachs which allows them to float motionless in the water as they hunt for prey.
