Chesapeake Bay Bridge, 1958 and 2002

Chesapeake Bay Bridge Linking Western and Eastern Shores of Maryland

Third longest bridge in the world composed of 123 spans, 4.35 miles over water.  Overall length 7.727 miles.  Length of suspension spans, 2,922 1/2 feet.  Roadway, 198 1/2 feet above Chesapeake Bay at highest point.  Cost, $45,000.000.

This card is postmarked in 1958 with a 2 cent Jefferson stamp.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge, Maryland
The Baltimore-Annapolis Washington region is linked to the eastern shore of Maryland by the five mile dual Chesapeake Bay Bridge, with the longest steel spans over salt water in the world. Over 200 feet at its highest point, the first span was completed in 1952 and the second added in 1973.

In December 2004, a study concluded that traffic across the bridge was expected to increase by 40% by 2025. The following year, a task force formed by Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich met to again explore the possibility of establishing a new Chesapeake Bay crossing. The task force concluded that a bridge would be the best option for an additional crossing, and four geographic locations for such a bridge were explored.  However in late 2006, the task force released a report on the study but did not make a final recommendation; members of the task force requested additional time to continue the study.

This card is a little over 8 inches by 11 inches!  Yet it made it through the mail with no problems.

postmarked in 2013 with a blackberry stamp from Finland - the sender writes that blackberries are not naturally found in Finland and that is why they are not on the postcard - but I love that it is a fruit postcard and a fruit stamp  :D

Acadiana (Cajuns) in Louisiana

Acadiana is one of the few pockets of American society that has its own unique heritage and culture, totally distinct from the rest of the country.  In the middle of the 18th century, some of the original Acadians of Canada sought refuge in Louisiana after they were expelled from their homeland by the British.  The Acadian people were primarily farmers of French nationality.  They finally settled in south Louisiana and brought with them their own customs and traditions which have helped shape what is now known as Acadiana.  The official capital of Acadiana is Lafayette, a fast-growing industrial, agricultural, and professional center.  Surrounding Lafayette are several towns and villages carrying on the traditions of the Acadians, or Cajuns as they are commonly known.

Phuket, formerly known as Thalang (Tha-Laang) is one of the southern provinces (changwat) of Thailand.

Phuket, which is approximately the size of Singapore, is Thailand’s largest island. The island is connected to mainland Thailand by two bridges.

Phuket formerly derived its wealth from tin and rubber. The island was on one of the major trading routes between India and China, and was frequently mentioned in foreign ship logs of Portuguese, French, Dutch and English traders. The region now derives much of its income from tourism.

After a successful career in his native United Kingdom in both silent films and early talkies, Hitchcock moved to Hollywood.

Kon-Tiki was the raft used by Norwegian explorer and writer Thor Heyerdahl in his 1947 expedition across the Pacific Ocean from South America to the Polynesian islands. Kon-Tiki is also the name of Heyerdahl's book and the Academy Award-winning documentary film chronicling his adventures.

Heyerdahl believed that people from South America could have settled Polynesia in pre-Columbian times, although most anthropologists now believe they did not. His aim in mounting the Kon-Tiki expedition was to show, by using only the materials and technologies available to those people at the time, that there were no technical reasons to prevent them from having done so. Although the expedition carried some modern equipment, such as a radio, watches, charts, sextant, and metal knives, Heyerdahl argued they were incidental to the purpose of proving that the raft itself could make the journey.

Heyerdahl and a small team went to Peru, where, with the help of dockyard facilities provided by the Peruvian authorities, they constructed the raft out of balsa logs and other native materials in an indigenous style as recorded in illustrations by Spanish conquistadores. The trip began on April 28, 1947. Heyerdahl and five companions sailed the raft for 101 days over 6900 km (4,300 miles) across the Pacific Ocean before smashing into a reef at Raroia in the Tuamotu Islands on August 7, 1947. The crew made successful landfall and all returned safely.
Thor Heyerdahl's book about his experience became a bestseller. It was published in 1948 as The Kon-Tiki Expedition: By Raft Across the South Seas, later reprinted as Kon-Tiki: Across the Pacific in a Raft. A documentary motion picture about the expedition, also called Kon-Tiki was produced from a write-up and expansion of the crew's filmstrip notes and won an Academy Award in 1951. It was directed by Thor Heyerdahl and edited by Olle Nordemar. The voyage was also chronicled in the documentary TV-series The Kon-Tiki Man: The Life and Adventures of Thor Heyerdahl, directed by Bengt Jonson.

The original Kon-Tiki raft is now on display in the Kon-Tiki Museum in Oslo.

Harvard named a building, Emerson Hall after him.
The Emerson String Quartet, formed in 1976, took their name from Ralph Waldo Emerson.
The Ralph Waldo Emerson Prize is awarded annually to high school students for essays on historical subjects.

Escaldes-Engordany is one of the parishes (or communities) of Andorra. The parish is composed of the areas of les Escaldes, Engordany, Els Vilars d'Engordany, Engolasters, and El Fener. As of 2011 it has a population of 14,395.

Until relatively recently, Andorra had only six parishes; the seventh, Escaldes-Engordany, was created in 1978.

Most likely this is Huey with his embroidered red cap and shirt.

In early comic books and shorts, the caps of Huey, Dewey, and Louie were colored randomly, depending on the whim of the colorist.

On few occasions until 1945 and most every cartoon short afterward, all three nephews wore identical outfits (most commonly red). It wasn't until the 1980s when it became established that Huey is dressed in red, Dewey in blue, and Louie in green. 

Disney's archivist Dave Smith, in "Disney A to Z," said, "Note that the brightest hue of the three is red (Huey), the color of water, dew, is blue (Dewey), and that leaves Louie, and leaves are green." Another combination that shows up from time to time is Huey in blue, Dewey in red, and Louie in green. In-story, this inconsistency is explained away as a result of the ducklings borrowing each other's clothes.

Peter Pan's Flight is a suspended dark ride at the Disneyland, Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Park (Paris) theme parks. Located in Fantasyland, it is one of the few remaining attractions that was operational on Disneyland's opening day in 1955. The ride's story, music, staging and artwork are based on Walt Disney's Peter Pan, the animated film version of the classic Peter Pan story by J. M. Barrie.

Bora Bora is an island in the Leeward group of the Society Islands of French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of France in the Pacific Ocean.

The island is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef. In the center of the island are the remnants of an extinct volcano rising to two peaks, Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu, (see below) the highest point at 727 meters (2,385 ft).

When we were here, we took a jet boat tour around the island and stopped in a few places to snorkel.  The water was crystal clear and the views were spectacular!
