Posti ran a campaign in fall 2016 to collect photos of faces from the public for a special stamp publication to mark Finland's centenary of independence. The thousands of photos come together like a mosaic to form different stamps, which are positioned on the sheet in the form of the map of Finland. Each stamp and booklet will be unique.

"These stamps are worth a close look, as receivers and senders might spot their own face or the faces of acquaintances on them," says Tommi Kantola, Design Manager at Posti.

Oiso, Tora-ga Ame

Oiso "Tora-ga Ame

Oiso being the site of the tragic love between Soga Juro, the elder of the Soga brothers famous for their vendetta, and the courtesan, Tora Gozen, the rain which falls around the time when the Soga brothers successfully avenged their father's death was called "Toraga ame, or Tora's rain, after the tears shed by Tora Gozen was parting from Juro.   Depicted in this picture is the highway just outside Oiso post town. Drenched by the heavy rain, a man and his horse plod their way with heavy steps.  Beyond a paddy field with its stacks of straw, there is an attractive view of pine trees along the seashore.  The sea sparkling white shows Hiroshige's rich sensitivity.

This postcard was postmarked in 2018 and is from Mali who has  the hopes of sending #1000Postcards on one year.  This is card number 369.  She writes that she wishes she could go back to Japan and mail it form Hiroshima where she bought it in 1984.  - As for me, I am happy to receive it wherever it was mailed from!

Originally, according to Eritrean Tigrinya oral traditional history, there were four clans living in the Asmara area in Africa.  These towns were frequently attacked by clans from the low land, until the women of each clan decided that to defeat their common enemy and preserve peace the four clans must unite. The men accepted, hence the name 'Asmara' which means "they [feminine, thus referring to the women] made them unite".
