on the card:
Ume blossoms in the snow / Ume at Kitano Tenmangu shrine
At Kitano Tenmangu shrine, which is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, whose favorite tree was the ume, or Japanese plum, ume blossoms begin to appear in around January, and their distinctive sweet aroma pervades the grounds until March. Despite the fact that spring is just around the corner, February is a cold month, and here and there in Kyoto one comes across scenes where lightly falling snow has left a dusting of white on the light-crimson ume blossoms.
the sender writes:
This postcard is a card of the Tenugui. Tenugui is a Japanese hand towel. The material is cotton. The charm of the Tenugui is that it has abundant color and design! This is a traditional design, and it is likely that now, the season in Japan, the Ume blossom are beautiful! (the card was sent in March)
postmarked with Nippon (Japan) stamp in 2008
(the stamps on the front were added by the sender, they were not part of the postcard)
