Doctor Who - The Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith)

The Eleventh Doctor

- - - - - - -

The Eleventh Doctor is an incarnation of the Doctor of the BBC science fiction television programme Doctor Who. He is played by Matt Smith, in three series as well as seven specials, over an almost four-year-long period.

- - -

Executive producer Steven Moffat on Smith's casting.....

The Doctor is a very special part, and it takes a very special actor to play him. You need to be old and young at the same time, a boffin and an action hero, a cheeky schoolboy and the wise old man of the universe. As soon as Matt walked through the door, and blew us away with a bold and brand new take on the Time Lord, we knew we had our man.

This postcard is postmarked in 2014 with an Europa stamp from Lithuania.

- - - - - - -

Vilnius is the largest city and capital of Lithuania. It is known for its Old Town of beautiful architecture and was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.

- - -

Out of several locations across Vilnius used by market traders to sell the wares of folk artists, Pilies Street is the most popular. It has a natural advantage over the Town Hall Square as the street is generally busy and less likely to be interrupted by the political or cultural events commonly held at the Town Hall. Many people visit the street to buy gifts at Christmas or before going abroad to visit friends. The market is also popular with souvenir hunters.

Union Flag of Great Britain

Union Flag
Originated in 1606 (Union of England / Scotland)
Re-designed in 1801 (Union of Great Britain / Ireland)

This postcard is postmarked in 2014 with a Great Britain queen stamp.

- - - - - - -

On 12 April 1606, a new flag to represent the union between England and Scotland was specified in a royal decree, according to which the flag of England (a red cross on a white background, known as St George's Cross), and the flag of Scotland (a white saltire on a blue background, known as the Saltire or St Andrew's Cross), would be joined together, forming the flag of England and Scotland for maritime purposes.

- - -

The design of the current Union Flag dates from a Royal Proclamation following the union of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801. It combines aspects of the flag mentioned above with the red saltire of St Patrick to represent Ireland.

Wales, despite also being part of the Union, has never been represented on the flag.

Tropical paradise on the West Coast

Photography by Mike Toy

This postcard is postmarked in 2014 with a church stamp.

Barbados is a sovereign island country in the Lesser Antilles. It is 34 kilometres (21 mi) in length and up to 23 kilometres (14 mi) in width, covering an area of 432 square kilometres (167 sq mi).

The origin of the name Barbados is either the Portuguese word Barbados or the Spanish equivalent los Barbados, both meaning "the bearded ones" It is unclear whether "bearded" refers to the long, hanging roots of the bearded fig-tree (Ficus citrifolia), indigenous to the island; or to the allegedly bearded Caribs once inhabiting the island.
