Three Postcards of Castillo San Cristobal in San Juan, Puerto Rico

Castillo San Cristobal
San Juan
National Historic Site

Castillo San Cristobal covers 27 acres and is the largest fortification ever built by the Spanish in the New World.  It's construction began in 1634, took approximately 150 years to complete, and was considered a masterpiece of 18th century military engineering.

The troop quarters, finished in 1733, consisted of eight large vaulted rooms which housed soldiers stationed to guard Castillo San Cristobal.
Here, Spanish soldiers could rest and recreate with a game of dominos or cards after a hard day of work.  Just off the main plaza, one of these barracks has been refurbished to look as it did during the late 18th century, complete with beds, muskets, and uniforms.

Castillo San Cristóbal, also known as Fort San Cristobal was built by Spain to protect against land based attacks on the city of San Juan. When it was finished in 1783, it covered about 27 acres of land and basically wrapped around the city of San Juan. Entry to the city was sealed by San Cristóbal's double gates. After close to one hundred years of relative peace in the area, part of the fortification (about a third) was demolished in 1897 to help ease the flow of traffic in and out of the walled city.

In 1983 This San Juan National Historic Site was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site by the United Nations.

Moffat Road History - (This information and more was found HERE.)

David Halliday Moffat, youngest of 9, born 1839 in Washingtonville, NY came to Denver March 18th, 1860. He operated Woolworth and Moffat Dry Goods Store, became Post Master, and was the Adjunct General of the Colorado Territories 1861.

In 1881 he became the president of the First National Bank, and then the President of the Denver Rio Grande Railroad. David Moffat built the narrow gauge "Denver and Pacific Railroad" that ran from Denver to Cheyenne, Wyoming. He owned over 100 gold and silver mines and the railroads that serviced them. He had more wealth than most, valued at 25 million dollars.
In 1904, he started building the "Denver Northwestern & Pacific Railroad" - the highest standard gauge railroad ever built in the United States.

The railroad went from Utah Junction (Denver) over Rollins Pass (11,660 feet above sea level) through the Grand Valley and terminated in Craig, Colorado. Moffat originally planned the railroad to go all the way to Salt Lake City, but when he died and the financing evaporated, the line ended up terminating at Craig.

The "Moffat Road" was intended to put Denver on a transcontinental railroad but that didn't happen until 1928 when the Moffat Tunnel (6.2 miles long - the third longest in the country) was finished. That was 17 years after David Moffat had died.

Guardalavaca
Cuba

This unused postcard is form 2017.

- - - - - - -

Guardalavaca is a town in the Holguín Province of Cuba. It is a tourist location due to its white sandy beaches and warm waters.

"Guardalavaca" literally means "guard the cow" in Spanish. There are several accounts as to how this name may have originated; my favorite version is this one:

The name may have originated from pirates going after the cattle grazing in the area. As pirates were spotted, the local farmers would thus shout, "Guardalavaca" - guard the cow.

Roswell, New Mexico
Independence Day celebrations in 1947 were marked by events of cosmic magnitude.  On that infamous day, intense thunderstorms demonstrated the power of the heavens.  Amidst a blinding rain and an electric-filled sky, radar tracked an object fall towards Earth.  Rumors of debris-strewn fields and a military cover up suggested a UFO had crashed in the Roswell area.  The mystery of the "Roswell incident" attracts a host of visitors annually.  Is Earth the target of galactic probes or is New Mexico simply an out of this world place to vacation?  Discover Roswell!

Blackbeard's Castle in the U.S. Virgin Islands

Blackbeard's Castle
St. Thomas
U.S. Virgin Islands

Blackbeard's Castle, St. Thomas Skytsborg Tower (meaning sky tower), was built in 1679 by the Danes as a watchtower for the harbor of Charlotte Amalie.  It is located at the highest point on Skytsborg Tower Government Hill.  Danish Soldiers used Skytsborg as a vantage point to spot enemy ships and protect impressive Fort Christian from attacks.

Fort Christian is at sea level, which was ideal for warding off attackers with canon fire, but did not offer a good enough view of the incoming ships before they entered the harbor.  It is not known what year Skytsborg Tower took on the name of Blackbeard's Castle, but the infamous Edward Teach, commonly known as Blackbeard the Pirate, did sail the Caribbean waters in the early 1700s.

It has become part of the lore of the island that he used the Tower as a vantage point for his own treacherous purposes.  Blackbeard's Castle is one of four National Historic sites in the US Virgin Islands.

Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman
Conductor of the Underground Railroad
Inspiration to freedom-seekers everywhere

David Fichter, pastel.  SCW 2015

Born into slavery in Maryland about 1820, Harriet Tubman escaped and became the most famous "conductor" on the Underground Railroad, leading over 300 enslaved people to freedom.

This postcard is postmarked in 2016.

- - - - - - -

Harriet Tubman (born Araminta Ross; c. 1822 – March 10, 1913) was an African-American abolitionist, humanitarian, and, during the American Civil War, a Union spy.

Born into slavery, Tubman escaped in 1849 and escaped to Philadelphia, then immediately returned to Maryland to rescue her family. Slowly, one group at a time, she brought relatives with her out of the state, and eventually guided dozens of other slaves to freedom. Traveling by night and in extreme secrecy, Tubman (or "Moses", as she was called) "never lost a passenger". Her actions made slave owners anxious and angry, and they posted rewards for her capture.
