Netherlands Queen Beatrix

Netherlands Queen Beatrix

This is postmarked in 2011 with a Netherlands stamp.

- - - - -

Beatrix (Beatrix Wilhelmina Armgard; born 31 January 1938) is the Queen Regnant of the Kingdom of the Netherlands comprising the Netherlands, Curaçao, Saint Martin, and Aruba. She studied law at Leiden University and in 1966, she married Claus von Amsberg, with whom she had three children. When her mother Juliana abdicated on 30 April 1980, Beatrix succeeded her as Queen of the Netherlands.

When World War II broke out in the Netherlands in May 1940, the Dutch Royal Family fled to London, United Kingdom. One month later, Beatrix went to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada with her mother Juliana and her sister Irene, while her father Bernhard and maternal grandmother Queen Wilhelmina remained in London.  The family lived at the Stornoway residence. In thanks for the protection of her and her daughters, (then) Princess Juliana established the delivery of tulips to the Canadian government every spring, which are the centerpiece of the Canadian Tulip Festival.

The Bee Gees

The Bee Gees - 70's Portrait

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The Bee Gees are a musical group which originally comprised three brothers: Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb. The trio were successful for most of their 40-plus years of recording music, but they had two distinct periods of exceptional success: as a pop act in the late 1960s and early 1970s and as prominent performers of the disco music era in the late 1970s. The brothers co-wrote all of their own hits, as well as writing and producing several major hits for other artists.

Born in the Isle of Man to English parents, the Gibb brothers lived their first few years in Chorlton, Manchester, England, then moved in the late 1950s to Redcliffe, Queensland, Australia, where they began their musical careers.

Captain Smith of the Titanic Saving a Child - April 15, 1912

Captain Smith Saving a Child while the ship was going down April 15, 1912

Published by The White Star Pub. Co. New York

This very rare postcard is unused.

- - - - - - - -

It is not known how Captain Smith died on the night of the sinking. Robert Ballard's book, The Discovery of the Titanic, and historians alike claim that Smith was on the bridge at 2:13 AM, 7 minutes before the final sinking and went down with the ship. Some sources state that Smith quietly wandered off to the ship's wheelhouse, while others say he was actively present in the radio room. Working near Collapsible B, Junior Marconi Officer Harold Bride reported seeing Smith dive into the sea from the open bridge minutes before the final plunge began. One story states he carried a child to the overturned collapsible B after the sinking and swam off to freeze in the water, but according to historians featured in the A&E Documentary Titanic: Death of a Dream, that story is generally considered romantic fiction.

El Djem in Tunisia, Africa

 El Jem - Tunisia

The amphitheatre of El Djem (this is written in 4 languages on the back)

postmarked in 2011 with a Tunisia stamp

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
El Djem is famous for its amphitheatre (often incorrectly called "a coliseum"), capable of seating 35,000 spectators. Only Rome's Colosseum (about 45,000 spectators) and the ruined theatre of Capua are larger. The amphitheatre was built by the Romans around 238 and was probably mainly used for gladiator shows and chariot races.

Until the 17th century it remained more or less whole. From then on its stones were used for building the nearby village of El Djem and transported to the Great Mosque in Kairouan, and at a tense moment during struggles with the Ottomans, the Turks used cannons to flush rebels out of the amphitheatre.

The ruins of the amphitheatre were declared a World Heritage Site in 1979.

The Main Admiralty Building in St. Petersburg, Russia

The Main Admiralty. 1806-1823. A Zakharov

unused but has writing on the back - from 2011

The Admiralty building is the former headquarters of the Admiralty Board in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The building you see now was re-built in the nineteenth century to support the Tsar's maritime ambitions.

It has a gilded steeple topped by a golden weather-vane in the shape of a small ship and is one of the city's most conspicuous landmarks. The spire is the focal point of old St. Petersburg's three main streets - Nevsky Avenue, Gorokhovaya Street, and Voznesensky Avenue - underscoring the importance Peter I placed on Russia's Navy.
