Red Door in Beijing, China

In highly hierarchical imperial times, even the colors of the doors in courtyard houses were under strict control, such as white paint for columns and black door decorations for houses of officials and civilians ranking below duke or marquis.  Red-paint gates became popular only after 1911 when the imperial era came to an end.

This is postmarked in 2009 from China.
