State Birds Collection from Kelly Glazner

National Postcard Week
May 3-9, 2015

Art by Kelly Glazner, NPCW 2015

The Ring Necked Pheasant was introduced to South Dakota and is originally from China.  South Dakota usually has the largest population of Ring Necked Pheasants in the United States and pheasant hunting is very popular there.  It was adopted as the state bird in 1943.

This unused postcard is # 60 in a limited edition of 80.

The Delaware state bird, the Blue Hen Chicken, is a domestic bird.  During the Revolutionary War the men took with them game chickens noted for their fighting ability.  When not fighting the enemy the soldiers amused themselves by pitting their Blue Hen Chickens in cockfights.  The fame of these cockfights spread throughout the army and when in battle the Delaware men fought so valiantly that they were compared to the fighting cocks.  It was adopted as the official state bird in 1939.

This unused postcard is # 48 in a limited edition of 80.

Every year for several years now Kelly Glazner has swapped original drawings of USA state birds for National Postcard Week. I personally look forward to her cards every year.

Although NPCW started out in the USA every year there are people from other countries who join in.  It is a lot of fun to see the limited edition postcards people come up with every year.  It is also a blessing to have postcards in my collection that are not massed produced! Don't get me wrong, I love the massed produced cards too.  ;-)   For more information or to join in on the fun next year, visit the NPCW web site HERE
